Neural Manipulation Specific and specialized training in palpation of individual nerves and the neural system allow hands on treatment of restricted components to restore mobility and facilitate efficient function. Restrictions identified with palpation can be treated with direct and/or indirect mobilization of the nerve, nerve sheath or fascial surrounding the nerve itself facilitating restoration of functional mobility in the spine and extremities. Precise neural mobilization also helps to promote efficient nerve & electromagnetic conduction and efficient intraneural blood supply to support local and systemic responsiveness. Neural mobility is crucial for efficient function and optimal health and movement of the human body. Nerves need to be mobile and unrestricted within the body’s surrounding structures and systems to provide the conduction needed to allow for efficient systemic responsiveness in daily activities and bodily functions. Our nerves send messages for movement and give us information about our body’s function including perception of pain. Restoring proper mobility allows for healing and freedom of movement with decreased strain to the body’s system.

Is Neural Manipulation an appropriate treatment for me?
Neural mobility is crucial for efficient function and optimal health and movement of the human body. Nerves need to be mobile and unrestricted within the body’s surrounding structures and systems to provide the conduction needed to allow for efficient systemic responsiveness in daily activities and bodily functions. Our nerves send messages for movement and give us information about our body’s function including perception of pain. Restoring proper mobility allows for healing and freedom of movement with decreased strain to the body’s system. Most patients that have mobility or pain restrictions also have concurrent restrictions in the fascial, joints and surrounding tissues including the tissues that surround and protect our nerves. Often our bodies adapt holding patterns or “guarding” when we experience pain and compensate with altered movement patterns that are often less efficient. As our nervous system is responsible for communicating and coordinating our movement it is important to restore the mobility potential of the neural tissue. Often, relieving tension in the nerve and/or nervous system also allows the muscles joints and fascia to relax further reducing symptoms and pain. Neural manipulation can be incorporated quite effectively with Functional Manual Therapy as well as Visceral Manipulation to enhance overall outcomes in functional restoration for each individual’s goals - enhancing one’s quality of life.

What problems can Neural Manipulation address?
Pain or lack of mobility in the body’s systems often inevitably involves the nervous system in some capacity. Fascial tissue tension and even joint mobility often improve as neural tension is reduced. Neural Manipulation can be used to treat a multitude of diagnoses including headaches, neck and back pain in addition to pain or dysfunction in the extremities. Sciatica, thoracic outlet syndrome, trigeminal nerve pain, cervical and lumbar radiculopathy and weakness form inhibition and pain in extremities also respond well to restoration of neural mobility.

How will I respond to treatment?
Neural Manipulation is a gentle technique that does not regularly cause exacerbation of symptoms. Patients often note decreased pain and increased mobility in the affected area as well as decreases in tingling and numbness (if present) over time as mobility increases. Multiple treatments may be needed especially if symptoms have been present for a prolonged period as surrounding tissue systems may need treatment to restore efficient mobility and reduce strain in the neural system.

How safe is it?
Neural Manipulation is a very gentle non-invasive technique and is very safe for most patients. Precautions do exist to allow for proper tissue healing after trauma or injury and history of such should be discussed by each individual with your practitioner to ensure the best care for each person.

What training is involved for Neural Manipulation?
The majority of Neural Manipulation Training has been completed through the Barral Institute as well as the Institute of Physical Art. Courses completed include NM1 through NM4 with the Barral Institute. Neural mobilization techniques are incorporated in the FMT certification with the Institute of Physical Art’s. Additional courses including Peripheral Neuropathic Syndrome of the Upper Quadrant and Lower Quadrant were also completed through the Institute of Physical Art. Physician Referral A “referral” for physical therapy evaluation and treatment is optional but not required. You may request notes be faxed to your doctor if you feel it is beneficial for them to be involved.
